Fluconazole is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections primarily caused by Candida albicans in the throat, esophagus, mouth, vagina, and other parts of the body. Fluconazole can also treat meningitis caused by fungus. Antifungal medications slow the growth of fungus. Fluconazole is the active ingredient in Diflucan.
It’s typically used to treat vaginal yeast infections and prevent yeast infections in those treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Fluconazole can be taken orally as a tablet or liquid once daily with or without food. It’s recommended to drink water with the fluconazole tablet. Be sure to take the medication at the same time every day.
Fluconazole is a triazole (antifungal) that works by preventing the growth of fungus.
A healthcare provider will evaluate your medical history, current health status, and symptoms to determine if fluconazole is appropriate for you. You may qualify if you have been diagnosed with any fungal infection.

Fluconazole is available in a variety of dosages ranging from 50 to 400 mg (milligrams) daily. A healthcare provider may change your dosage depending on the severity of your infection. You may start with a higher dosage of 400 mg and gradually be prescribed a lower dosage.
You can take a missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is near the time of your next dose. If close to the time of your next dose, continue with your regular dosing schedule.
A healthcare provider may not recommend fluconazole if you have a history of the following:
Fluconazole is not a controlled substance.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should not take fluconazole during your pregnancy. Fluconazole may secrete into breast milk. Still, there is limited research on the effect of fluconazole in pregnant individuals. In some cases, a healthcare provider may recommend a smaller dose of fluconazole.
Drinking alcohol while taking fluconazole may increase your risk of side effects and liver damage.
While weight gain is not a common symptom of fluconazole, it’s possible to see changes in your weight while taking the medication.
On average, fluconazole is prescribed for weeks or months, depending on the severity of your infection. There is an increased risk of side effects if you use fluconazole for longer. Be sure to follow directions from a healthcare provider on how long to take fluconazole. Finish treatment even if you start to feel better before the recommended time frame. Long-term use of fluconazole may require additional supervision by a healthcare provider.
Fluconazole is only used to treat fungal infections, like urinary tract infections, oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis, peritonitis (inflammation in the abdominal lining), and any Candida infections.
Fluconazole begins working as soon as one to two hours after ingesting the medication. You may see improvements within a couple of days of starting the medication.
No foods directly interact with fluconazole. However, reducing your sugar intake may help with managing Candida overgrowth.
Fluconazole can treat skin and nail fungal infections. It’s typically given as a daily treatment with a varying dosage based on a healthcare provider’s recommendations.
The following side effects may occur while taking fluconazole:
It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking fluconazole. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Severe side effects that can happen while taking fluconazole include:
Fluconazole may interact with certain NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen (Advil). Naproxen (Aleve) may also negatively interact with fluconazole. Fluconazole (Diflucan) may also interact with pain medications, blood thinners, vitamin supplements like vitamin A, and more. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking another medication at the same time as fluconazole.
