Fexofenadine is an antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and irritation in the nose, throat, and mouth. It’s available as an over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication under the brand name Allegra. Fexofenadine is the main ingredient in the tablet and liquid form of Allegra. It’s typically taken once or twice daily with water to relieve allergy symptoms for either a limited time or long-term.
Histamine is a naturally occurring chemical in the body that leads to allergy symptoms. Fexofenadine reduces allergy symptoms by blocking the effects of histamines.
A healthcare provider will evaluate your medical history, current health status, and symptoms to determine if fexofenadine is appropriate for you. You may qualify if you have been diagnosed with seasonal allergies.

Fexofenadine (Allegra) may not be recommended for those with the following:
A healthcare provider may recommend an alternate allergy medication for children with a history of kidney issues. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you experience an allergic reaction to fexofenadine.
Avoid taking fexofenadine with fruit juices like orange, grapefruit, or apple juice. Fruit juices may reduce the effectiveness of fexofenadine (Allegra).
Allegra targets allergy symptoms, whereas Allegra-D targets allergy symptoms and sinus congestion. Allegra-D also has pseudoephedrine in addition to fexofenadine as an ingredient.
While traditional Allegra is not considered a controlled substance, Allegra-D is considered a controlled substance in some states because of the presence of pseudoephedrine. A combination of fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine is the main ingredient in Allegra-D. Pseudoephedrine is considered a controlled substance in the following states:
Other states may have varying restrictions on the distribution of pseudoephedrine.
Generally, Allegra is safe for long-term use. However, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before using Allegra regularly. Some types of Allegra may not be recommended for long-term use.
Fexofenadine is not present in the Allegra-D nasal decongestant.
Generally, fexofenadine is safe to take during pregnancy. Still, check with your healthcare provider before taking fexofenadine while pregnant.
It’s recommended to avoid drinking alcohol or only drink in moderation while taking fexofenadine (Allegra).
Fexofenadine (Allegra) and other antihistamines may lead to weight gain after long term use.
On average, fexofenadine starts working within one to two hours of taking the medication. Allegra tablets or liquid medication can last for up to 24 hours in your system.
Fexofenadine (Allegra) is less likely to cause drowsiness than other allergy medications. However, you may still experience some mild drowsiness.
Generally, it’s not recommended to take fexofenadine (Allegra) with other antihistamines. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before using other medications with fexofenadine.
There is a children’s version of liquid fexofenadine (Allegra) available. It’s recommended that children 2 to 12 take 5 milliliters (mL) every 12 hours. Be careful not to give children more than 10 mL in 24 hours.
The most common side effects of fexofenadine (Allegra) include:
It’s important to know that not everyone will experience the same side effects while taking fexofenadine. If you experience these or any additional symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider.
