Fenofibrate is a daily prescription medication used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride (fatty acid) levels in the blood. Fenofibrate removes LDL cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol to unclog arteries and support better blood flow to the heart, brain, and the rest of the body.
Fenofibrate is the active ingredient in the brand name medication Tricor. It’s typically used along with a low-fat diet to treat high triglyceride levels and cholesterol in the blood. You can take fenofibrate as a capsule, tablet, or delayed-release tablet once daily. You can take Tricor with or without food. However, other brands of the medication may require food.
Fenofibrate is a fibrate. Fibrates help the body speed up the natural process of removing cholesterol from the blood.
A healthcare provider will evaluate your medical history, current health status, and symptoms to determine if fenofibrate is appropriate for you. You may qualify if you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol.
